Left and Right: Bigotry at play in fall election

Much has already been said about how this may be one of the most distorted, and certainly will be the most expensive, campaign in history (I leave it to the reader to decide if there’s a connection there). But what is even more disturbing and hasn’t really been publicized, is that this will likely be the most bigoted election in history.

Most obviously, despite being elected as the nation’s first black president, Barack Obama confronts a noticeable minority of people who can’t stand that fact and/or despise him for his DNA. The whole ridiculous “birther” conspiracy indicates the degree of subtle race bias in the electorate. (John McCain was born in Panama, and though questions were raised in 2008, there wasn’t nearly the clamor about his birth records, eligibility, etc.) A recent study also found hate groups used racial stereotypes about the Obama family on Facebook to recruit members and spread their ideas. Now, there are stories of people hanging empty chairs from trees, symbolically lynching Clint Eastwood’s dramatic portrayal of the president at the RNC. Does anyone seriously think this would happen with a white president?
