Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals will swap out snowboards and snowshoes for wakeboards and kayaks to celebrate spring at its annual Outdoor Spring Symposium Thursday at Central Washington University.
“It’s a great time,” said OPR director Ryan Hopkins. “There’s going to be food, music, vendors and lots of free giveaways.”
The event is open to the community and kicks off with a vendor fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) patio.
More than 15 different vendors are scheduled to attend, including new gear from companies like Northwest Riders and Motion Board Shop.
“There are so many vendors that are excited about being here,” Hopkins said. “The goal of this program is to promote the opportunities students have to get out and get active.”
Rappers Mike Champoux and Supaman as well as members of the CWU music department will perform. There also will be mini-clinics and a barbecue offered by CWU Dining Services.
After the vendors pack up their gear, a longboard slalom contest will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in front of OPR.
“Every year the whole longboard aspect has been growing and growing,” Hopkins said. “Because of the flat geography of our campus, it’s hugely popular.”
After the longboard champions are crowned, the festivities continue with a performance by the One World Taiko drummers from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the SURC Patio as part of CWU’s Earth Week celebration. One World Taiko performs a, contemporary style of Japanese drumming.
The Outdoor Spring Symposium’s finale event will be the CWU Wake Sports club’s screening of the wakeboard film “Defy: The Danny Harf Project” at 7:35 p.m. in the SURC Theatre. Admission is $3 for CWU students and $5 for general admission.
As a special introduction to the screening, attendees will view a short film produced by and starring members of the CWU Wake Sports club. Students will also be entered into a raffle drawing and be eligible to win wakeboard prizes from the Wake Sports club.
The film screening will also feature the unveiling of this year’s OPR Photo Contest champions. Winners of all three categories — outdoors, pursuits and rentals — will be determined by a vote conducted in the SURC the week leading up to the symposium. The winners will be announced at the screening and will receive a backpack from OPR.
