The best advice Tony Avellino, a neurosurgeon who splits time between Ellensburg and Seattle, said he ever received was as a second-year medical student, training in neurosurgery at the University of Washington.

One of the residents told him to approach everything in life fresh and with an open mind, “not knowing anything about it,” he said.
