Kittitas County’s unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in May.

Kittitas County’s mixed economy track record continued into May, according to the monthly report released by the state Department of Employment Security.

Kittitas County’s unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in May. On the good news side, this down from 5.6 percent in April. On the not-so-good side, that is up from 4.6 percent in May 2018, which is a continuation of a trend.

“Local monthly unemployment rates have been edging upwards for the past eight months (from October 2018 through May 2019),” the Department of Employment Security Department report states.

The report state’s that the county’s year-over-year civilian labor force rates have growing at about the same rate as the state’s, but the nonfarm growth rates have been slowing for three consecutive months.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

In year to year comparisons in individual employment categories the county saw the following decreases:

n Total nonfarm, 17,860, down 60.

n Manufacturing, down 30

n Trade, transportation and utilities, 2,650, down 40.

n Retail trade, 1,770, down 90.

n Education and health services, down 40

n Leisure and hospitality, down 60

n State and local government, down 40.

In year to year comparisons in individual employment categories the county saw the following increases:

n Construction/mining/logging, 1,130, up 80.

n Wholesale trade, 650, up 50.

n Information and financial activities, 640, up 30

n Professional and business services, 680, up 20.

n State and local education, 5,430, up 40.

HOUSING

Construction has been an ongoing strength for the county’s employment market. Construction has added jobs for the past 14 months.

The county’s housing market, though, has slowed according to information the state compile from the Real Review Data Report prepared by KMW Enterprises. LLC of Selah.

According that that report, the number of homes sold January through May was 329, down 8.9 percent from the number sold in the same period of 2018.

The average Ellensburg home price also dipped slightly, by 1.3 percent, from $317,703 to $312,582.
