The Ellensburg Rodeo, Junk-tiquen, the Kittitas Valley Event Center and the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility were among those recognized for their contributions to tourism at a new tourism awards gala last week in Ellensburg.

The Ellensburg Rodeo won best tourism business and outstanding contribution by an individual or organization. Kittitas Valley Event Center and Wild Horse Wind Farm tied for best attraction.

The event was organized by the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and held at the Liberty Theatre last Friday. Attire varied from jeans and cowboy hats to blazers and dresses.

“It’s designed to showcase our tourism brand,” said Jessica Tate, director of events at the Chamber of Commerce. “An occasion … since there is so much going on, just to showcase them, give them a little pat on the back.”

Chamber Tourism Director Amy McGuffin said the awards were to honor businesses and outstanding events, and were based on community votes through online and paper ballots.

Best new tourism business went to Huffman Farms for its corn maze and autumn activities.

Troutwater was honored best outdoor recreation/adventure tourism and an award for best accommodations went to Suncadia.

McGuffin said that April is a good time for the Tourism Award Gala because spring is the start of tourism campaigns.

“This event was in the mind of saying thank you,” she said.

The presentation included tourism advertisements created for the Ellensburg and Cle Elum areas. Tripp Muldrow of Arnett Muldrow and Associates presented examples of tourism campaigns from Central Washington Color, MyEllensburg and a new campaign for Cle Elum.

“It was remarkable driving across (Snoqualmie Pass) because it gave me a chance to reflect,” he told the audience. “Once you come over the pass, as I did today, you just relax.”

The company has worked for more than 400 communities in 25 states, Muldrow said.

“This is a community that really gets things done,” Muldrow said.
