ELLENSBURG—A crash on Interstate 90 Wednesday afternoon left one person dead and another in serious condition after a driver tried to make an illegal U-turn, according to the Washington State Patrol.

David A. Jasper, 85, of Edmonds was driving his 2001 Toyota Camry westbound on I-90, just south of Ellensburg in the right lane ahead of a 2002 Dodge pickup traveling in the left lane. Jasper attempted to make a U-turn at a posted no U-turn freeway crossover when the front of the pickup, driven by Beverly Miller, 56, of Cle Elum, hit the left side of the Camry.

Jasper's Camry came to rest in the median, facing south. The pickup came to rest in the left lane, facing west.

Jasper died at the scene. His passenger, Evelyn M. Jasper, 82 of Edmonds, suffered head injuries and possible internal injuries and was transported by ambulance to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. She was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she is listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit.

Miller suffered contusions on her right arm but was not transported. Both vehicles were totaled and towed by McIntosh Towing.

The cause of the collision was an illegal U-turn, according to WSP. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved. No charges will be filed.
