Pfenning Road barn fire

No one was hurt when a fire destroyed a barn at 1810 Pfenning Road on Monday afternoon.

Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Rich Elliott said the structure was 75 percent involved when firefighters arrived. A black column of smoke was visible throughout Ellensburg. Firefighters arrived at 2:15 p.m.

No one was at home at the time. The 45-by-70 foot barn was being used as a storage. Elliott estimated damage at $100,000 to $160,000. No nearby structures or vehicles were damaged.

Pfenning Road was closed for a time and traffic was diverted through the Brick Road cemetery.

The fire was under control by 3:45 p.m., with firefighters staying on scene. The cause is under investigation.

Douglas MacArthur, a photographer who has chronicled old barns throughout the county, was on scene. He estimated the barn dated to the 1970s.
