The $15.5 million Hotel Windrow and Basalt will be ready for business in time for the holiday season, according to managing partner Steve Townsend, who is planning the soft opening for the first downtown hotel in 38 years in two stages.

The Basalt Restaurant will open on Dec. 13 while construction teams will put the finishing touches on the Hotel Windrow with a target date for Dec. 18.

“From the very beginning, our goal for the hotel was to be the community’s hotel,” Townsend said. “We want something the people that live here can take pride in. What separates us from other hotels is that we’re a full-service hotel.

“We’ll have all the amenities, anything from a rooftop deck with bar to room service to valet parking. along with meeting and convention facilities. We’re going to have all of the elements of a big-city, full-service hotel, and that’s something Ellensburg just doesn’t have.”

The Hotel Windrow and Basalt features 59 high-tech guest rooms in historic downtown Ellensburg within walking distance to downtown businesses. It will accommodate meetings and gatherings in the 8,000 square foot gathering space, which includes a grand ballroom and rooftop deck.

The Basalt restaurant and craft cocktail lounge at the base of the atrium lobby, features the work of renowned Chef Larkin Young.

“We believe a lot of our business will be made up of people coming from the West Side for leisure activities in Ellensburg or the area. It’s going to be made up of people coming here for business meetings and other kinds of group functions,” said Townsend, who hopes Hotel Windrow and Basalt will be the event hub in Ellensburg.

“We hope to service people coming in to go to events at the university, including athletic events. We also believe people will come here for our restaurant, because of our chef. But it’s also a place to gather for good food for people that live here as well.”

The original grand opening target date was set for September, but a series of delays factored into the process, Townsend said. But it is finally ready for the Christmas holiday season. The Hotel Windrow lobby will be displaying festive trees, garlands and wreaths. Executive Chef Young will debut an exclusive menu around Christmas, featuring unexpected twists on holiday classics.

The Basalt will also feature a special menu during “Girls Night Out,” a semi-annual shopping and dining event organized by the Ellensburg Downtown Association on Dec. 12.

Hotel Windrow will also help usher in 2020 with the first of what will be the annual New Year’s Eve celebration with a one-of-a-kind menu, wine, live music and a balloon drop at midnight.

“It’s certainly a goal to have various types of musical events in the ballroom,” Townsend said. “We really do want music to to be a big part of the hotel. We have a grand piano and we’ll have piano music in the lobby often.

“It’s late in the season, but we hope to have music available on the rooftop deck during the summer.”
