A man robbed the Kittitas Public Library at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon, making off with $15-$20 in library money and an employee’s wallet, according to Kittitas Police Department Chief Brent Nierman.

A 5-foot-10-inch to 6-foot tall white male wearing blue jeans and a black, zip-up, hooded sweatshirt entered the library and produced a small handgun, Nierman said. The man appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s.

The library was empty except for one employee, and the robber demanded the woman hand over her wallet. He then had her give him any other money in the library, after which he left on foot.

Nierman said the man had his hood pulled down and cinched up so the library employee could only see his eyes.

Kittitas Police officers were on scene within a minute after the woman called 911. Ellensburg Police, Kittitas County Sheriff and Washington State Patrol personnel assisted.

Nierman said officers brought out a tracking dog, but were unable to find anything conclusive.

He said there were no specific links between this robbery and one that occurred at D&M Coffee in Ellensburg last week, but he added he wouldn’t rule it out.

The library employee is doing well, he said. “She was very calm during the situation, and given the circumstances actually remembered quite a few details that will likely help in the investigation,” he said.
