Long-time Ellensburg resident Matt Anderson is running for Ellensburg City Council, according to a news release.

“I am running for City Council because Ellensburg is on the cusp of an expansion in the hospitality and tourism industry,” Anderson said. “I believe now is the time to leverage the growth already happening within the private sector, as well as the newly awarded money flowing into public facilities, such as the Kittitas Valley Event Center and Bowers Field.”

Anderson is currently the general manager of the Holiday Inn Express in Ellensburg. Prior to his current position, he was the Kittitas Valley Event Center Director for five years.

“I believe my 20 years in the hospitality industry, both the private and public sector, has provided me with the insight and experience to help the city take advantage of the coming expansion,” Anderson said.

Anderson grew up north of Spokane and graduated from Riverside High School and Eastern Washington University. He and his wife moved to Ellensburg in 2001.

Matt and his wife, Theresa, a teacher in the Ellensburg School District, have two children.

“In addition to fostering the growth in local tourism — as a father, I am very interested in making Ellensburg a family friendly city. Right now there is a real need for family friendly activities and facilities. If we can find a way to fill those needs, it has the added benefit of creating economic growth for the city.”

Anderson has previously served as a member of the Kittitas County Planning Commission, chief examiner for the Kittitas County Civil Service Commission and is a current member of the Ellensburg Lodging Tax Committee.
