The Grant Transit Authority began running buses between Ellensburg and Moses Lake earlier this month.

Routes 320 and 321 will run from Moses Lake to Ellensburg and back multiple times per day Monday through Friday.

The new routes were made possible by a grant to help fund travel expenses for rural education. Many students in Moses Lake and the surrounding areas attend Central Washington University because of its proximity.

The hope for the new bus lines is to make things easier for students traveling between CWU and Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, according to transit authority staff. While the routes were designed with students in mind, anyone is welcome to use them to get back and forth between the communities.

Driver Thomas Brimm said he bid specifically to drive route 321 because he wanted a change of scenery. Brimm has been with the Grant Transit Authority for the past nine years and has driven all over Central Washington for the company.

Brimm’s route, 321 begins its journey every morning in Moses Lake at the Multimodal Transit Center at 9:40 a.m. From there, the bus makes stops in Warden, Othello and Royal City before making its end-of-the-line stop at the bus stop at CWU behind the 7/11 gas station on 11th Ave at 11:50 a.m.

Route 320 departs earlier for those who wish to utilize the bus line to get to and from school. The bus departs Moses Lake Transit Center at 5:30 a.m. and arrives at CWU in Ellensburg at 8:15 a.m. before making its return trip to Big Bend Community College by 10:30 a.m.

With school not starting until September and service just starting, there haven’t been many passengers. Whether the routes are full or empty, they will continue to run year round, Grant Transit Authority Operations Manager Kathy Jess said.

One of the main draws of the Grant Transit Authority routes is the difference in fares between Moses Lake and Ellensburg. The bus charges $3 each way, Jess said.
