To the Editor:

Rep. Dave Reichert’s pattern of not holding town halls and hiding from his constituents can no longer be tolerated. Even with the nation’s summer health care drama, Reichert did not release any statements on the issue and how we would vote should any health care bill come back to the House. In addition to his absence on health care, Reichert has voted time and time again to defund Planned Parenthood, despite support for the organization from his constituents. This problem of inaccurately representing his constituents has become his method of representation: he hasn’t held a town hall in the last six years.

How are his constituents to know how he will vote on critical issues such as the defunding of Planned Parenthood or health care if he doesn’t consult the people he was elected to represent? We need Reichert to meet with his constituents and pledge to vote no on any bill that would defund Planned Parenthood. It is up to us to put the pressure on Reichert to meet with us, listen to us, talk to us, and engage the people he speaks for in D.C.

With a Trump presidency, it is our duty to hold him accountable and not just rubber stamp the Trump/Pence agenda by bowing to pressure from members of his party. This is not a partisan issue: Reichert, like all representatives, was not elected to vote based on party lines, but rather to represent his constituents — us. The upcoming August recess is our time to make our voices the loudest. Reichert will be home and we need to show him that he can’t keep hiding from us, and it’s time to come out of the shadows to actually represent us.
