The Prophet Elijah Orthodox Mission blessed Mercer Creek on Jan. 6 as part of its celebration of Holy Theophany, which commemorates in baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River, according to a news release from the church.

They joined most other Eastern Orthodox Churches around the world in this sacred tradition. They walked in procession to a local body of water on the feast day for the blessing service.

Father Paul Moses Jaroslaw tossed a wooden cross into the creek that runs through the parish property, which the parish calls “Mercy Creek,” and 17-year-old acolyte Matthew Sautter retrieved it from the icy water.
