Ellensburg is the place to be for high school and junior high rodeo as kids from around Kittitas County will play host to student athletes from across the state at the Ellensburg Rodeo arena.

Both high school and junior high students compete today at the arena, with the high schoolers finishing up on Sunday. The junior high contestants began Friday afternoon and end around noon today.

Leading the junior high contingent is Kassidy Bremner. The Kittitas Secondary School sixth-grader is second in the All-Around standings in her rookie season, and leads the state in barrel racing and breakaway roping. In eight rodeos thus far this season (two one-header rodeos in four cities) Bremner has four barrel racing wins and two in breakaway. She’s placed in seven of eight barrel events. Bremner is also third in pole bending and tied for fourth in goat tying.

Her teammate, Audrey Wolfenbarger is sixth in poles (placing in seven of eight events) and 15th in goats.

The high school team boasts Annie Minor as the county’s highest placer in the standings. Minor is splitting second in the state in goat tying. She won the first four performances of the year. In team roping, Minor, heading for partner Guy Ring, has placed in seven of eight rodeos, including one win in Ritzville at the beginning of the school year.

Minor is fifth in the All-Around standings.

Kaylee Winter is 17th in the team roping standings and fifth in goat tying. She has placed in goats three times over the eight rodeos thus far this season.

Saddle bronc rider Brennan Maletzke sits in third in the state high school standings.

Ellensburg opens the spring schedule of four straight weekends of competition in Central and Eastern Washington. After this weekend’s stop, high schoolers travel to Omak, Ritzville and Goldendale before Memorial Day weekend’s state finals in Walla Walla.
