Ellensburg High School’s Leah Holmgren and Kate Laurent finished 1-2 in the cross country Districts 5/6 meet at Apple Ridge this past Saturday

After the girls and boys Ellensburg High School cross country teams won the Central Washington Athletic Conference outright, the Bulldogs kept the momentum going into Districts 5/6 at Apple Ridge in Cowiche this past Saturday.

Both Ellensburg girls and boys were the District 5/6 champs in the three-mile race. The girls head into state for the eighth straight year, and seventh for the boys.

The girls especially were dominant with Leah Holmgren (17:35) and Kate Laurent (17:42) leading the pack. The duo broke the course record with ease (17:59), and were the top two runners. There was quite a gap between them and the third-place runner (18:20).

It was personal records for Holmgren and Laurent.

“They just rocked,” EHS head coach Jeff Hashimoto said.

Freshman Rylee Leishman took fifth place (18:27), Madison Thompson 18th (19:42), Holly Fromherz 22nd (19:52), Elisa Wallace 25th (19:58) and Alex Hall rounding out the lineup with a 27th place finish (20:08).

“It was definitely the best run on the course for every girl in the varsity race,” Hashimoto said.

The boys were led by Patrick Adkisson with his 15:53 time to earn eighth-place honors, and Baylen Bean was right behind him for ninth (15:54).

Gabe Fjellstad placed 11th (16:12), Reece Braman 14th (16:19), Isak Larson 30th (16:38) and Zachary Mathias 35th (16:53).

Hashimoto said the boys were slightly more tired because of their training the past week, but was still elated with their performance to take first as a team.

“I think that training should pay off as we get into state,” Hashimoto said.

Hashimoto said training won’t be much different in the final week, but make sure everyone is rested and healthy for the biggest race of the season.

Ellensburg travels to Sun Willows Golf Course for 2A state this Saturday.
