Kittitas High School’s head coach Dusty Hutchinson speaks to his players during their game against Coupeville High School on Oct. 5 at Harding Field.

KITTITAS – Kittitas High School found its grove in the second half, but unfortunately for the Coyote football team, it was too little too late against sixth-ranked Asotin High School as KHS fell 48-12 at Harding Field.

Kittitas came out strong on the first drive of the night. KHS linebacker Dawson Byers picked off Ethan Fugate in the red zone, stopping the Panthers dead in their tracks. Unfortunately, the Kittitas offense couldn’t mirror the same momentum and fell victim to a three-and-out.

It foreshadowed much of the game for the ‘Yotes. What followed were stalled Coyote drives, while the Panthers rolled with six straight scoring drives, with three of those starting deep in Kittitas territory after a turnover or bad punt.

Asotin (5-0) earned its first score of the night midway through the first quarter and then added another touchdown with just five seconds off the second quarter clock for the 14-0 advantage. Asotin added 28 more points before halftime and went into the locker room up 42-0.

Kittitas (0-5) would finally hit pay dirt late in the game. Facing a 1st-and-10 from the 35, quarterback Josh Rosbach rumbled through many would-be tacklers for 63 yards to the Asotin 2-yard line, setting up a scoring strike shortly after when Rosbach hit Kyler Federwisch for the touchdown.

Soon after, Asotin fumbled its possession into the hands of the Kittitas defense. Seconds later, Tucker Newcomb ran 17 yards to the end zone for another Coyote score.

Kittitas – plagued by injuries throughout the season – watched as starting quarterback Blake Catlin went down to injury in the first half. He did not return to the game and his status for next Friday’s game at Dayton-Waitsburg is uncertain.
