Ellensburg cross country hosts Invitational with new format

The Ellensburg High School cross country team competed in its annual Invitational last Saturday with a new co-ed relay format.

The co-ed relay was introduced at World Cross Country Championships in 2017 and Bulldogs’ head coach Jeff Hashimoto decided to use that format for the invitational to emphasize the team aspect of the sport. As in the World Cross Country Championships, the legs may be run in any order.

During the invitational the Bulldogs prevailed on a tight race with Enumclaw, with the lead switching four times during the race. Both teams had their girls run legs two and four of the five-leg race.

Isak Larson led off for Ellensburg in second behind Enumclaw’s Sam Lingwall, who ran the fastest male leg of the day. Leah Holmgren moved into first with the fastest female leg of the day. Dominic Deady of Enumclaw passed Reese Braman on leg three but Braman kept within four seconds of the lead. Kate Laurent brought the Bulldogs back into first, and Patrick Adkisson held on for an 18-second win.
