KITTITAS — If you’re a football fan looking to get a jumpstart on the season, this weekend is a good chance to get out and see a little ball.

On Friday in Ellensburg, Central Washington University is hosting the 3A/4A East-West All-State High School Game at Tomlinson Stadium. Kick off is at 6 p.m.

The Eastern Washington Coyotes of the Washington State Football League are hosting the Tulalip Hawks in the final game of the regular season Saturday at 4 p.m. at Kittitas Secondary School. It will be Salute to Service night and all first responders, current and past military get in for free.

The Eastern Washington Coyotes are a local semi-pro football team consisting of players ranging from 19 to 40 years old. They have veterans like owner/player Scott Millenbach, who played with the Yakima Mavericks semi-pro team a few years ago.

“I’m 32, but I still love playing the game,” Millenbach said. “We have a few young guys that are trying to put enough film together so they can maybe can’t catch on at some college or junior college.

“We have other guys that used to play in high school and college ball and just want to keep on playing as long as they can.”

The Washington State Football League started out with five teams, but financial backing caused two to drop out. Saturday’s game between Eastern Washington and Tulalip will set up the upcoming postseason where the second and third place teams will play on July 27. The winner will advance to play the first place team on Aug. 3 for the league championship.

“The proceeds from Saturday’s game will go to the Ryan Thompson Memorial Fund,” Millenbach said.

Despite being just another struggling alternative football league, you just never know who your watching out there. The Yakima Mavericks (2005 to 2016) had a pretty nice run with a fair amount of talent. Mavs place kicker and punter Joe Smith made team history in 2008 when he signed an NFL contract with the New York Jets. The former Central Washington All-American spent three weeks in camp before being released.
